Mayor's Marathon Run
Every summer solstice, which is June 21, starting the Wednesday before the solstice and ending on the Sunday following the solstice, The Mayor's Marathon Run—complete with marathons and half-marathons for people of all ages and abilities—attracts runners with a gorgeous, once-in-a-lifetime racing terrain of Anchorage.
Anchorage Fur Rondy Festival
With 70 years of history behind it, the Anchorage Fur Rondy Festival is as fun and thrilling as it ever was. Begun in the 1930s to ward off the scourge of winter with stoking fires, shoveling snow and gathering as community, the festival now covers three days' worth of every kind of happening you can imagine. Times have changed and now there's a whole lot more to do in Anchorage and this festival celebrates the beautiful strong spirit of those who came before with basketball, photo contests, dog races, hockey tournaments, snowshoe softball, the running of the reindeer and all kinds of world and national championships in the world of snow sports.
